Phillip Zackler
Phillip Zackler is Chief Operating Officer, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary at Toyota Research Institute (TRI). He serves as the CEO's principal operating partner, providing executive leadership across TRI's business, legal, governance, and organizational functions.
Phillip oversees TRI's non-research enterprise functions, including Finance, People and Culture, Technical Engineering, Facilities, Communications, Stakeholder Relations, Legal, Safety, and the University Research Program. Originally hired to build TRI's legal function, his scope expanded over time to lead the full range of the company's operational and administrative activities, ensuring that business execution, governance, and institutional priorities are aligned in support of TRI's mission.
Phillip also serves on the board and investment committee of Toyota Ventures, Toyota's early-stage venture capital firm, with more than $800 million in assets under management.
Before TRI, Phillip practiced law at Kirkland & Ellis LLP and Minami Tamaki LLP in San Francisco. He later moved in-house at GoPro, Inc., where he supported the company's software, finance, HR, and administrative functions. He previously served for more than ten years on the board of directors of GLIDE in San Francisco and has also served on local community boards and committees.
Phillip holds a B.A. in political science from UC Berkeley and a J.D. from Duke Law School.
